Eddie Izzard was a street performer in Covent Garden, but before too long he was selling out major West end venues with his one-man stand-up shows full of improvisation.
Many of his early TV appearances were in fundraisers, for example, What's Up Dockers and The Big Snog, a 90 minute sketch show, in aid of Hysteria Trust.
He sometimes appears on current affairs shows - often in a Europhile capacity.
Eddie Izzard likes wearing women's clothes. He came out as a transvestite to his friends at 23 and to his father when he was 29.
As well as his stand-up act Eddie Izzard has acted in TV, the theatre and films.
Eddie Izzard's film credits include Ocean's Twelve, The Avengers, All The Queen's Men, My Super Ex-Girlfriend, Romance and Cigarettes, and Velvet Goldmine.
Izzard's notable theatrical appearances include Edward II and A Day In The Death Of Joe Egg.
In 2007 Eddie Izzard appeared as conman Wayne Malloy in The Riches, in the States; and also saw the filming of the drama Kitchen, based on the best-seller, Kitchen Confidential.
