Tommy Vance was a DJ, particularly known for playing heavy metal.
He left school at 15 and his early jobs included being a cook in the merchant navy.
In the 1960s he worked as a radio DJ in Vancouver and Los Angeles (originally as Rick West and then as Tommy Vance).
He also worked for a number of radio stations in or around the UK including Radio Caroline.
From 1978 for 15 years Tommy Vance presented Radio 1's Friday Rock Show.
His TV work included presenting Top Of The Pops as well as the Friday Rock Show on VH1.
