Profile A A Gill got his break in journalism in 1991 by writing a first person, although anonymous, article in The Tatler about being in a detox clinic.

A A Gill had spent more than a decade taking drugs and existing in an alcoholic haze, until a GP made him face up to his alcoholism and seek treatment.

He went on to be a contributing editor with GQ and Vanity Fair.

In 1993, A A Gill joined the Sunday Times. He became an acerbic restaurant and TV critic.
