Arthur Lowe

Profile Arthur Lowe was born in Derbyshire in 1915. His father was a railways booking clerk.

Arthur Lowe served as a radar technician in the Middle East during World War II, and participated in shows to entertain the troops.

In 1945 Arthur Lowe made his theatre debut with the Manchester rep.

In 1948 he married Joan Cooper, who played Godfrey's sister in Dad's Army.

Arthur Lowe amassed several TV credits including playing Leonard Swindley in Coronation Street from 1960 to 1965.

Soon after, he translated the role to two new series Pardon the Expression and Turn out the Lights.

In 1968 Arthur Lowe landed his most famous role, that of Captain Mainwaring in Dad's Army.

Dad's Army ran on the BBC from 1968-77.

In 1982 Arthur Lowe died of a stroke.
